Daily bread: 1 Corinthians 15:58

We do so often lose heart in doing good. Sometimes I think: why in the world am I doing all this? Why do I care for others? Yes, I often despair….my work seems without purpose; an endless battle that would obviously never be won. The more one helps, the more help is needed…. Sometimes I feel that, what I do, does not make any difference.

I am wrong. I am doing God’s work; the work He created me for. How can it be without purpose?

I know that most people are not into charity like me, but I’m sure you feel the same way about your life in general. Most of us (I believe) try to live good lives, doing the right thing. I often look at people that live in disgrace, in sin….people who would not think twice about not hurting another person and I wonder at the obvious blessed lives they live; filthy rich, beautiful, without a care in the world. Comparing their fantastic existence to my own, well, it troubles me….living an ordinary life, riddled with cares and burdens, but living it in a good way, trying to help others and yet….no blessing. How does one explain that?

I don’t think one needs to explain it….we need to keep running the race in an honorable way, without trying to cheat our way through life. You see, the explanation has already been given anyway….here, read this:
Matthew 6:19-21:
“Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moths and vermin destroy, and where thieves break in and steal. But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where moths and vermin do not destroy, and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.

Kindness never goes unnoticed, it is a tiny golden nugget that brings light into another life and adds to our treasure chest in heaven…….

So friends, let us not give up on doing good, let us fight the good fight, until the very end.

Daily bread: Psalm 139:13-14

#DailyScripture #Psalm139

Via @YouVersion http://bible.com/1/psa.139.13-14.kjv

We so often fall into the trap of self hate; I know I do. Sometimes I’m so disgusted with myself and my life that I can simply not understand what my family, much less God sees in me. As a teenager I was particularly morose about these things…I even went so far as to starve myself into a full-fledged eating disorder. Perhaps this feeling of low self esteem was the result of my constant efforts at pleasing others, having my actions and looks measured, and then always found not quite enough. For the longest time I struggled with this, until I realised that the problem was not necessarily me; the problem was with the people who did the measuring and the judging, said people who were actually those who benefited most from my constant serving. I realised that some people cannot feel good about themselves unless they bring others down….others like myself.

You see, I read this particular Psalm and it dawned on me that, despite what others may think, I am actually a miracle. I am, in fact, a creation of God Himself and no human has the right to judge me and I myself don’t have the right to question the perfection of God’s creation. I AM GOOD ENOUGH!

So, dear friend, next time your self-esteem takes a dive, consider this…..you are perfection personified. God knew you even before you were born; it is through God’s miracle that you were formed inside your mother’s womb and through His grace that you’ve grown up, whatever the circumstances. You’ve survived a life that was, perhaps, hard at times, tougher than anyone could ever imagine and you made it. Are you surprised at this…that you’ve survived? I know I am. You made it to this day, because God wanted you to….you survived because He was always the shadow by your side, the guardian Angel in the rafters. He knows you, knew you and will keep on knowing you, no matter what you do.

It doesn’t matter what you are, who you are, what you do….your entire existence is the result of God’s masterplan for your life. You are NOT a loser, you are NOT unworthy, you are NOT ugly or stupid….someone who constantly makes mistakes and seems to screw up everything in life…believing that means you are questioning God’s creation and His wisdom in placing you on this earth.

You are perfect, you are beautiful, clever, wonderful, miraculous…..accept it with gratitude. You may allow yourself to feel proud, because you really are special. GOD NEVER MAKES MISTAKES.

A bruised and battered hedgehog is being looked after by a wildlife charity after having an operation to amputate one of its legs.

Named Barstool, because he now has three legs, the hedgehog has also only got one eye and had to have a loose tooth removed. He was found in a garden in Northgate, Crawley by a resident who saw that he was limping. She called Horsham wildlife charity Care for the Wild who took the little hog to Arthurs Lodge Vets in Brighton Road where his broken and dislocated leg was amputated.

Tarnya Knight, wildlife carer at Care for the Wild, said: “The poor little thing has obviously been in the wars, so maybe we should have called him Lucky.

He was lucky that a kind member of the public spotted the distress he was in, and he’s been lucky to find a vet who would perform this operation. He won’t be able to go back into the wild because of his disabilities, so now he’s with me until we can find a good home for him to go to.

“It’s hard to know exactly what happened to him, but there are some likely suspects. He could have been caught in garden netting, and wrenched his leg trying to escape. If you’ve got netting in your garden, please try and make sure it’s at least a foot off the ground so hogs can’t get caught in it.

“Strimmers are another enemy of wildlife, and injuries from them can obviously be nasty, and often fatal. If you are strimming, please take a moment to check that nothing is hiding in the long grass or undergrowth, and you could well save a life. Another risk to hedgehogs are slug pellets. They may contain methaldehyde which will kill a range of wildlife, including hedgehogs, so please use an alternative method.”

While Barstool will not be returned to the wild, Care for the Wild are often looking for safe release sites for other hedgehogs. If you can offer a safe location where there are already other hedgehogs, please call the charity on 01403 249832 or email info@careforthewild.com.

Daily bread: Colossians 3:12

In my earlier post tonight, I shared a quote by Hans Hansen about ‘standing alone’. The verse above emphasizes this concept for me; especially in the world as we know it today.

These days, if you are kind and considerate, compassionate, generous and caring, people tend to think you are quite odd. The world has become a ruthless place and modern man is so driven to seek his own gratification, that stabbing your neighbor in the back (not always figuratively speaking – unfortunately) has become common practice.

The world has changed, and we along with it and we are tempted to conform, to give in to the pressures of modern society. Therefore, to remain true to what your heart tells you is the right thing to do,  means to step aside, step off the high and well-travelled road. You’ll need courage, because, my friend, you will be scorned; you will be called a sissy, a goody-two-shoes, an (excuse the French) ass-kisser.

The thing is, we all have a choice….either you follow the herd or you veer off the path and follow your heart. I believe that we all know the difference between right and wrong and, as the scripture says, we are God’s chosen people. We have a responsibility to do what God wants us to do NOT what man wants us to do to ‘fit in’ with the crowd. God speaks loud and clear in our hearts….that ‘little voice’ inside tells us exactly how to live life. If following His orders means that we will stand alone against the world, so be it, because you know…..if we stand on God’s side, we are never really alone. If the world wishes to hurry off into darkness, let them be, let them go on scorning, teasing, taunting; if you stand firm in the ways of the Lord your price will be far greater than a mansion in an affluent suburb or a shiny convertible.

Friends, we should never give up in our task of doing good….will you then choose to follow the tiny, rocky footpath God laid before His people or would you prefer ‘easy-street’, where you can join in a riot of ruin?

(While writing this, I am reminded of one of my favorite posters. It is called ‘De Breede en de Smalle weg’, which translates as ‘the wide and the narrow road’. Have a look at the artist’s depiction of worldly ways and Godly ways…..I’m sure you’ll find it quite interesting.)

Did you ever see this? The performance may be a few years old, but the lyrics still ring true!

Popular performing artists like Beyoncé, Mary J. Blige, Rihanna, Carrie Underwood, Mariah Carey, and more joined forces to perform the hit single “Just Stand Up” at Radio City Music Hall in September 2008. As part of the fundraising event Fashion Rocks, many other artists performed, and proceeds from the event went to the charitable organization Stand Up To Cancer (SU2C).

Take a look at some of the lyrics:

The heart is stronger than you think
It’s like it can go through anything
And even when you think it can’t
It finds a way to still push on, oh

Sometimes you want to run away
Ain’t got the patience for the pain
And if you don’t believe it
Look into your heart — the beat goes on…

Watch the live performance in the video below, and get inspired to stand up!

Sharon sez:

BCA month is coming up and this year I will not only support it because of my family history, this year I support it because I’ve experienced it first hand. Early detection saved my life this year. Be aware girls (and boys…yes, you are not actually spared, you know). Watch this video and listen to the words…I have been spared the pain and anguish of treatment; most people are not that lucky and blessed. Don’t make the mistake of thinking it will NEVER happen to you.

According to my oncologist the average age of a breast cancer patient is NOT 50+ anymore….the women are getting younger and lately those diagnosed have NO family history of it at all. Whatever the cause for this anomaly….be it diet, chemicals in our food and water, more sedentary lives…it doesn’t matter; please be aware and save yourself the horrible reality of becoming just another statistic.

The only reason I got lucky was because I took action in time. Some people thought I was being too radical, opting for a bilateral mastectomy, but it turned out to be the best decision I’ve made in a long time. Had I NOT done this, I would have been going through chemo and radiotherapy now and would probably have been fed loads of medication for the next 5 years of my life. Please don’t EVER think you are paranoid; listen to your heart….trust me, your body will instinctively know there is something wrong and your ”little inner voice” will speak up….don’t ignore it!

Go for screening….remember, you are NOT too young to be diagnosed and you are NOT safe if your family don’t have a history of the disease. Your a woman, a mother, wife, probably with a career and a wonderful future….don’t miss out on it; don’t miss out on LIFE!
