Reading the story of the murderous Abimelek (Judges 8 and 9) and how he came to his own death (Remember? A millstone fell on his head.) reminded me of something someone once said. About how we must always look up (to God in heaven).
The ‘someone’ was my grandmother……she once wrote a small note in a birthday card to my Dad…’Look up son.’…..we nearly giggled ourselves into a seizure about THAT one, I tell you! Shame, she meant it so well……but it sounded so funny (and when king laugh knocks at a Halliday’s door…..you HAVE to let him in!). Anyway, when the last giggle and hiccup drifted off into the sunset, I realised how wonderfully true her words really is and today, 35 years on, I still remember her little message…look up, whatever happens, look up.

Obviously this is advise ol’ Abimelek could have used. Indeed, if he weren’t so intent on getting the hell out of Dodge after the people rebelled against him, and took the time to literally LOOK up, he could have saved himself a………, well……., a headache.

I’ve heard this kind of message over and over in the past few weeks. We are so busy with our daily lives, the things of here and now, that we completely forget about God’s role in our lives. We would do well to take some time out and consider what God wants from us, for us. Sometimes we worry about why things keep on going wrong and we seek answers and solutions within ourselves, on our own, without consulting God. Have you EVER considered that God really has a plan for your life? When you deviate from that plan and blunder around to something that seems right to you, God will, like a good parent, take steps to nudge you back on the right path.

Let me explain further by way of a story a friend shared recently. She is a writer…has been a writer since childhood. Then she got married and raised a family while doing some kind of admin work, leaving the writing for ‘later’….when the kids are bigger, when they have a bigger house, when she can stay at home, etc…..etc. Needless to say, this never happened. She got divorced and found herself penniless and unemployed with 3 children to raise. She’s been job hunting for a year now, without luck. Finally she decided to visit her pastor…..she was getting so depressed…….she wanted to find work so that she can feed her family, so why isn’t God helping her? During her session with the pastor she had a revelation….an epiphany, if you will. She realized that she was so intent on finding a job to help their earthly lives, that she’s forgotten her Godly calling. Time and time again, during prayer she had a vision of paper being printed, books, typewriters, word processors and so forth. She finally got the message that God was so desperately sending her. So she went back to writing……..and she’s already negotiating with a publisher! She said to me: Sharon, I forgot to LOOK UP!’

Well, there’s the message of the day. Not quite in a nutshell, but you know me, talking too much is my forte! Look up, friends and neighbours! Look up to God and LISTEN to what He says. He has a plan for you and if you follow the plan blindly, He will bless your life, you will be cared for. Don’t make the same mistake as Abimelek……if you stop looking up, something may drop down straight from the heavens…..and if you’re really unlucky, your mindless race to make your earthly life prosperous and comfortable will divert your attention so much that you will not even hear the whooshing sound of the falling millstone. It will be…..lights out, the end…….. So, take the hint!
